The professional athlete can be found most days pursuing his passion of golf. But for a year, he lived with the daily pain of arthritis in his hip that crimped his golf game. "I guess it was the wear and tear on my hip from playing baseball and golf that caused the problem," he says. New Approach to Post-operative Pain Management

A St. Joseph Medical Center advertising campaign is underway that features a new approach to managing post-operative pain that surgeons at Towson Orthopaedic Associates physicians helped pioneer.

WBAL-AM WLIF WWIN
WCBM WPOC WZBA

The surgeons at Towson Orthopaedic Associates and the Orthopaedic Institute at St. Joseph Medical Center offer a breakthrough-approach to pain management after surgery. An approach that they helped pioneer.

This advance makes recovering from surgery on your back, joints, even hands or feet, faster and less painful than ever before. So, patients can be instantly more comfortable, and better prepared for physical therapy that's so important to recovery.

This approach often results in the use of less long–term pain medication, less pain, less nausea, an easier post-operative rehabilitation and shorter hospital stay. The specific approach for your procedure should be discussed directly with your orthopaedic surgeon.

All pain medication techniques are employed in conjunction with the St. Joseph Medical Center Department of Anesthesiology. Techniques will differ by surgeon and by procedure, but listed below are general guidelines:

Hip and Knee
Long-acting medication is delivered to the operative site in many hip and knee operative procedures.

Spine
Local anesthetics are used by a surgeon to decrugery. Patient-controlled analgesia is available for most patients.

Extremities
Regional anesthetic is injected above the operative site to provide 12-24 hours of complete pain relief following surgery.

All these techniques allow patients to use less narcotic pain medication. This approach often results in less long–term pain medication, less pain, less nausea, an easier post-operative rehabilitation and shorter hospital stay. For more information, please discuss the post-operative pain management approach with your physician.
