Steps for Diagnosing Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis can be diagnosed using a combination of medical history and physical testing. This examination may include:

  • A medical history evaluation to understand your risks.
  • A physical examination to measure your height and check your spine.
  • Bone densitometry to measure your bone density.

Treating Osteoporosis

It is important to keep bones healthy and strong at all ages. Since bone loss is irreversible, osteoporosis treatment focuses on preventing the condition from worsening. Here are some ways you can reduce your risk of fracture:

  • Adequate Calcium and Vitamin D intake
  • Exercise
  • Stop smoking
  • Limit alcohol and caffeine intake
  • Osteoporosis Medications

Factors to be considered when determining osteoporosis treatment options include:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • The severity of bone loss
  • Other existing health problems

From Kathy Mulford, M.S., CRNP, ONP-C.

Towson Orthopedic Associates: Dr. Mulford“Over the last 15-20 years we have experienced the profound impact osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures have on our patients and their families. Osteoporosis affects nearly 10 million individuals in the United States alone thereby adding millions of dollars to the cost of health care.

At Towson Orthopaedic Associates we have seen many patients at risk or affected by osteoporosis and now plan to participate in the prevention as well as the subsequent treatment of the fractures. Many times these patients and their families have little knowledge about this disease as well as effective methods to both treat and prevent osteoporosis.

It is one of our goals to provide patients and their families with knowledge regarding osteoporosis, including prevention and treatment. We are creating this center to include evaluation and management, appropriate diagnostic testing, education, physical therapy, and nutritional guidance.

We have developed a team of health care professionals with expertise in orthopedics, physical therapy, nutrition, endocrinology, rheumatology and radiology to provide guidance and support for the patient with osteopenia/osteoporosis.

We are now accepting patient referrals for the evaluation and management of individuals at risk for osteopenia/osteoporosis or currently diagnosed with osteopenia/osteoporosis in need of or desiring continued management.

We look forward to working with you and your patients.”

Sincerely,

Kathy Mulford, M.S., CRNP, ONP-C.
