Before Surgery
To ensure a successful surgery and recovery, a few key steps are required. You should establish a care partner to assist you before and after surgery. This person can help with things like transportation to and from appointments and assisting with daily activities. You will also need to attend a pre-operative education class , and a nurse will call you to review your medications and answer any questions. In the weeks leading up to your procedure, it is important to stop smoking and decrease your alcohol intake. You should also eat a balanced diet with plenty of protein and fiber.
The Day of Surgery
On the day of your surgery, please arrive at your designated time to avoid any delays. You will be asked to bring a list of your medications and any necessary prescriptions, as well as a photo ID and insurance cards. You must also shower with a special antibacterial soap and can drink a 20 oz. bottle of regular sugar Gatorade to help you stay hydrated and reduce nausea.
Post-Operative Care
After surgery, you will be taken to the recovery room where nurses and therapists will help you get up and walk. Pain management strategies will be used to help you feel comfortable, including medications and RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation). You can expect swelling and bruising, which are normal parts of the healing process. It is crucial to monitor your incision for any signs of infection or blood clots and contact your healthcare provider if you have concerns.
