Dr. Alexander J. Adams is a board-eligible orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hand and upper extremity surgery, with advanced fellowship training in microsurgery.
He treats the full spectrum of conditions affecting the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder, with particular expertise in complex elbow cases. His clinical focus includes carpal and cubital tunnel syndromes, trigger finger, tendon and ligament injuries, nerve compression and peripheral nerve conditions, fractures, upper extremity arthritis, joint preservation, arthroscopy, joint replacement, soft tissue reconstruction, and pediatric upper extremity injuries.
Dr. Adams performs minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures and uses advanced microsurgical and microvascular techniques, incorporating plastic surgery principles to optimize both functional and cosmetic outcomes. He has extensive experience with acute and chronic injuries, including complex pediatric cases. His approach emphasizes patient-centered, evidence-based care, prioritizing non-operative solutions when appropriate and using the latest surgical techniques to maximize recovery and restore mobility.
A Maryland native, Dr. Adams graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University with a dual major in Human Science and Chemistry. He earned his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University’s Sidney Kimmel Medical College, followed by an orthopaedic surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute. He then completed fellowship training in hand, upper extremity, and microsurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Adams has authored more than 27 peer-reviewed publications and over 60 published abstracts, and has held teaching roles at Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital. He has provided orthopaedic care for professional and collegiate athletes, including members of the Philadelphia Eagles, Flyers, 76ers, and Union; the Boston Red Sox, Bruins, and Celtics; and athletes from Harvard, MIT, Boston College, Boston University, Drexel, and the University of Pennsylvania.
He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), and American Association for Hand Surgery (AAHS).
Dr. Adams sees patients at Towson Orthopaedic Associates’ Bel Air and Bellona Avenue locations. Outside of medicine, he enjoys fishing, boating, swimming, biking, and spending time at Maryland’s beaches with his wife and two children.
